Books on various
subjects which may be borrowed out are placed at the Open Shelf
- Special Reserve
consists of books and articles recommended for reading by lecturers for
student assignments and coursework. These books are identified by a red
spot on the spine and are restricted to University academic staff and
This is a research
collection consisting of books and journals about Malaysia, Singapore
and Brunei. These items are identified by the location symbol 'rbm' in
the call number and are located in Hamzah Sendut Library 2. Owing to the
need to preserve such items, students are not permitted to borrow them.
- Bahasa Malaysia
books in all fields are located in Level 1, Hamzah Sendut Library 1.
- Current Periodicals
Collection and Newspaper
Current issues are
shelved on the display shelves in the current periodicals area. The
current issues and newspapers are to be used within this area.
- Theses and
These are located in
the Special Reserver Book Collection area and are identified by the
location symbol ârbâ in the call number.
- Banned Book
Books which are
banned or considered prejudical by the Government are kept under lock
and key. Academic staff and students who wish to read these books must
obtain a letter from the Dean of the School stating that the books
concerned are required material in connection with a course of study or
relevant to a piece of research. These books are identified by the
location symbol 'b'.
This is a collection
of books for students in the off-campus programme. A postal loan service
is provided and books are despatched to the students.
This collection is
restricted to Matriculation students.
- Reference and
such as encyclopedias, dictionaries, bibliographies and other reference
books are located in this collection. Reference books have the location
symbol ârâ while abstracts have the location symbol âaâ in the call
number. Reference items can be used only in the Library and are
generally not allowed to be borrowed out.
Some books, backsets
of journals, local conference proceedings, theses and archival materials
are available in microfilm and microfiche. Enquiries on the use of such
items can be made at the Inter-Library Loan and Reprographic Unit or at
the Reader Advisory Desk.
- Fiction and Light
This collection is
located at Level 3, Hamzah Sendut Library 2.
- Media Collection
Media Materials such
as video tapes, cassettes, slides, CAI programme, kits and diskettes are
located at the Media Services Division, Hamzah Sendut Library 1.
